It is a little on the big side for a nightstand but my bed is really big and I needed something with height but openness at the bottom so it would not visually eat up the space too much. You like?

DIY: Front Door Sand, and Stain Part 1 and a few things I learned

I spent a good bit of the day sanding and staining my double front doors. I have been dreading this project. We have only lived here a little over a year but the afternoon sun beats down on our door. So, after only a year it looks faded and needed some maitenance. This picture below is before this summer hit and it actually looked way better than it did when I started on it today.

I got really lucky when I hit the hardware store today. I had already done my research on what to buy and how to go about this process but there were a few things that I learned today about different stains and protective coats like poly. I was looking to use the stains that would last the longest and hold up against the brutal afternoon sun. I was also looking for a clear protective coat that had some sort of UV protection that would help it last even longer. Here is what I ended up with:

I was about to buy polyurethane when the saleswoman stopped me. She told me to NOT use poly on an exterior that was going to get alot of sun. This I did not know. Everybody in my neighborhood uses poly and that is what our builder used on our door. Hmmmmmmm! Maybe that is why we are all having to redo our doors so often. So I walked out with Cabot Spar Varnish and will use that as my final clear coat.

The next thing I walked out with was a different stain than I had planned on buying. I had planned on buying Minwax in Jacobean. She told me that I would be better off using the stain from either Cabot or Rust-oleum because their stains are pigment based and the color would last longer than the Minwax stains that are dye based. So, I ended up gettting this one by Rust-oleum in the darkest color for that line called Kona.

More to come...... I finished one coat today and will let it dry overnight.

Today I had to pick out grout for 2 bathrooms that we are renovating in New Orleans. I am curious what everybody prefers when it comes to grout. Of course it depends on the colors in the tile and in the bathroom, but what are your preferences????

I knew I did not want to use white b/c it concerns me that it would start to look dirty over time. I also knew I didn't want black b/c that was too dark.

I like the look of the floor tile in this picture. It looks like they used a light gray, its not white, nor dark gray or black.

Here you can see the cararra marble tiles that we are using in one of the bathrooms.

So what color would you use????

My entryway almost complete; need to patch hole in sheetrock + paint color

I am almost done with my entryway. I got this mirror up recently and just last week my father-in-law came over and move the electrical box that was where you now see the open spot in the sheetrock. He moved it up for me so that the lamp cords would not be hangning down. Now all I have to do is patch the hole!!!!! Yay!!!!

Note to self: straighten the lamp shades..... LOL!!

Bamboo Blinds Part Deux

There are pros and cons to bamboo blinds. Ok, actually I can only think of one con and lots of pros. The only con is that they do not give complete privacy at night. There are 2 solutions to this problem that I know of. First, hang curtains with the bamboo blinds and close the curtains at night. Capiche!! Second, put up a privacy liner. Check out how this creative blogger added blackout liner to her bamboo blinds.
First, she untied the strings at the bottom of the shade. Then she spread the shade out flat and lined it up with the piece of blackout liner that she had cut to fit it. Next she broke out the hot glue gun and used it to adhere the two together. The blue lines in the first pic show where she used the glue down the shade.

Then she used scissors to make a small cut where the rings are and pulled it through. See above pic. She then pulled the strings back through the rings as they were before and hung the shade. Below is the finished product.

Hanging Bamboo Blinds: Do's and Don'ts

DON'T

If you are going to hang the bamboo blind above and outside the window frame then make sure it is wide enough to cover the window frame, not just the window. See how above you can see where the white trim around the window ends going up the side of the shade. That doesn't look good in my opinion. If they had closed the curtain to where it covered where the frame ends then it wouldn't be as bad.

In this picture above (which has been around the web and back) you can see how they hung the blind all the way up to the ceiling and made it wide enough to cover the surrounding window frame. It looks good!

Again.... DO

Just like the last pic. The hung it all the way to the crown molding and covered the frame on both sides. It would just look funny to see the frame end on both sides of the shade 12" from the top yet the see shade go all the way up.

DON'T
I am all about bringing the curtains up to the ceiling to elongate the look but there does not need to be a big gap between the shade and the curtain rod.

This pic from Young House Love is another good example of what to DO. They hung the blind just under the rod and it looks good. Here is a picture of before they hung the blind and see how much better it looks without that space between the rod and window frame showing.

The curtains are a different fabric on the inside. They are the same pattern as the pillows shown on the cushion. There is a mattress in the drawer that pulls out if kids wanted to have a sleepover.

please excuse the pics that were taken by the store owner's cell phone. I called and he said it was in. I asked if he would take a pic b/c the curiosity was killing me. It is hard to tell how wonderful this sofa really is in these pics. I can't wait to get it. We had it made and have been waiting for a couple of months

It is a english roll arm sofa from Hickory Galleries. Very well made sofas. We decided to get it with a sleeper and we customized a few other things. We are very excited about it and can't wait to get it in our house. It had been so long since I picked out the fabric that I started second guessing myself. It is a pretty neutral color. It is a light gold/camel color. I can't remember the actual name but it is going to look good with my "Amazing Gray" walls.

So, what do ya think?

I have not been able to stop thinking about this lumbar pillow since I saw it in the magazine. I really like the size of it. Must get one! I also keep going back to look at the Lee Industries sofa. Great fabric choice. The rug is from West Elm and the coffee table is from target I think.

Ty Larkins is a interior designer that lives in Baton Rouge. He is not too far from where I live. These pictures have been around for a while. Joni from Cote de Texas did a post on him back in 2008, but I still love looking at all of his work. He is extremely talented and I would drop everything if I ever had the chance to work with him or even for him. I am not even joking about that. He is 100% my style and I have yet to see anything that he has done that I didn't like.

How amazing is that huge piece of art above the sofa. I love big statement pieces like that.

Part 2: Landry Room Roman Shade

Part 2 of the roman shade project. I followed the intructions from here. I have sewn the front fabric and lining fabric together like a pillowcase. Here it is turned inside out and I am measuring out how I want the folds to be spaced out.

I have the fabri-tac out to glue the plastic battens onto the shade. Since the shade is inside out the battens will not be seen once the shade is up but they will give the folds a nice structured fold instead of bunching up when the shade is pulled up. I don't recommend using the battens on sheer fabric, silk fabric and others like that where the battens would show through.

Laundry Room Roman Shade progress

Well I wouldn't really call it progress. Remember when I posted about this fabric a while back. Well I am just now getting around to finishing the roman shade. Really I just have it faux hanging. Meaning that I have it hung with push pins b/c I wanted to see what it looked like hanging. I have sewn on the lining and have it all ready to go. Now I have to sew on the rings and all of the hardware and decide how big I want the folds to be and all that good stuff. I will post pics as I go along.

I love that pattern for a roman shade. I got it at Calico Corners if anybody is interested.

Don't you just love the apricot drapes??? How about the punch of color on the chair seats??? Love that turquoise.

She moved that amazing chandelier that is original to the house from the dining room into this room. I love that she kept a good mix of old and new.

Valorie did a great job! It makes me very happy when I see pictures like this. Even happier that I only live an hour away from New Orleans and that I could stop by any time and see Valorie over at Perch.

Finding the perfect Drum Pendant

I have been searching for an affordable drum pendant for our dining room. Here are some of the fixtures that I have narrowed it down to. The first one is my favorite one but it is pricey. I really like the chain and finial that comes with it. The shade is 18"wide at the bottom and it comes with an acrylic diffuser.

Grasscloth Shade from Shades of Light featured above is the second highest priced fixture I have saved in my files priced at $189. (Way cheaper than the first fixture) The shade is a bit bigger than the diffuser. It comes with a 14" diffuser and the shade is 20" wide. So, I am not sure how that looks at the bottom???

Midtown Burnished Bronze Three-Light Pendant is at Bellacor for $178. The shade is only 18" in diameter, while closer to 20" is what I am looking for.

The Short drum pendant above is from West Elm and it costs $149. It has a fabric diffuser and it is 24" in diameter which is bigger than the others. You would need to buy a pendant converter kit which is sold separately at West Elm or one like this one. Both are priced under $20.

The Finley Small Wheat Pendant Lamp from Crate and Barrel is priced at $149. It comes with a fabric diffuser instead of a plastic or acrylic diffuser also.

This last one is from CB2. It is only $49. The catch is that it is made to be plugged into an outlet.....But, you can easily make it into a regular fixture by making a few adjustments. See what one girl did at Pepper Design Blog to make it work for her nursery. Also, it needs a canopy since it does not come with one. They sell them for pretty cheap at Home Depot or Lowe's. The only other problem with this one is the color. It only comes in white and I was thinking along the lines of a natural color shade.

Kentucky Mama's Kitchen Before and After

I saw this kitchen a while back but I am posting a series of before and afters for inspiration. This kitchen is a great example of what a little paint can do for cabinets. I like everything that Kentucky Mama did from the ceiling, to the faucet, paint color and all.

I hung this mirror yesterday and I am very pleased with how it looks. The lamp shades do not go with anything else in the area. The curtains are green and the lamp shades are red. I don't want the Christmas look year round. The chair covers are a blue and green ikat. Hmmmmmm....

Next thing on the list is taking down that chanelier. I have been searching for the right one, and by right one I mean one that I not only like but can also afford. The problem is that there are soooooooooo many that I like, but I dont like the price tag.

Working on my mantle...... Any suggestions????

I have decided to do something different on my mantle now that all of my X-mas decorations are all put away. I found these 3 green pieces at Paul Michael's store on my way back from Arkansas. Love that store!!!

Now I just need to decide what to do with the rest of the mantle????????

Laundry Room Roman Shade Fabric

I got this fabric a couple of weeks ago from Calico Corners when they had a big sale. I wanted a fun fabric for the laundry room and I think I have accomplished that w/this fabric. I started measuring and cutting yesterday, and will keep you posted on the progress.

Bedroom Pillows

I have been playing around with the pillows on our bed since we moved in several months ago. Green is my all time fav color as you can see. This is my fav pillow combo so far. What cha think??

Art from the NOLA art festival

I went to the NOLA art festival a couple of weeks ago. Local artists come and set up booths to show their art and I came home with the cutest little canvas art pieces. One is a mardi gras mask, the second is of Pat O's, the next is the cutest little crab ever, and the last is of the street car "Desire".
I love that all the sides are painted the same. It is green with a fleur de lis on the side.

I tried to get some pics that really sh0w the detailing and texture they have. The crabs eyes poke out.
The best part of it all is that she has many more to choose from. I had a very hard time narrowing it down to these 4. I want to add one that has an alligator, one with red beans and rice, crawfish, one of the cathedral, and many more. So, I have started a collection that I will be adding to over the years. I plan on filling up the wall.

Our bed

So, here is our bed. It all started with inspiration from the blog "knock off wood". I then enlisted my father in law for his engineering skills and he made it bigger and better than I could have imagined. It is very similar to the Pottery Barn Farmhouse bed or the Hudson bed, except we lifted it up higher and really customized it to my liking. One thing I wanted to avoid was the box spring showing after it was all said and done. So we gave it extra tall sideboards and instead of using wood underneath the box springs he used steel rods that would be stronger and let the box spring sit lower.
It is made out of cypress wood. (which soaks in stain very fast compared to some other woods) I stained it with minwax Jacobean. The only thing that I have left to do is go over it with Poly. You can see areas where the stain is uneven on the footboard, but that will soon be fixed.

Actually, I don't know if these are the exact same barstools from Ballard Designs but they look the same to me and I love them. I would even get them in this blue color.

Lusting over the fabric on this couch

I love the fabric on this sofa. Luckily Lee Industries is the maker of this sofa and they still sell this fabric, its called 'Salem Citrus'. Hmmmm, that color would look really good with my gray walls..... I also spy a white garden stool just like mine.

Above all, my fav thing about this pic is the lighting. Love the lanterns, which you know that I love if you know me. Even better, this is a pic of a home in New Orleans!
